From Buggy Beginnings to AI-Powered Quality with Cristiano Caetano

Technical Writer, Katalon Updated on

Recently, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Cristiano Caetano, VP of Product at Katalon, to explore his journey in software testing.

It was a path that began with frustration, evolved through innovation, and now looks toward an exciting AI-driven future. Cristiano's insights shed light not only on his personal career path but also on the broader evolution and future of software testing.

For those unfamiliar, Katalon provides a comprehensive test automation platform that helps teams accelerate testing across web, mobile, API, and desktop applications; addressing many of the challenges Cristiano encountered throughout his career.

Act I – The Past: Discovering the Importance of Quality

Cristiano didn't begin his career in testing; instead, he found his way there out of necessity.

In the late 1990s, working as a developer, Cristiano regularly faced the harsh reality of releasing software riddled with bugs. The first nine to ten years of his career were focused on development. His team was building buggy software with low quality, since testing wasn't part of their process, which led to customers being frustrated.

The problems were tangible and costly: customers encountering application crashes, data corruption issues that required emergency fixes, and basic functionality failures that eroded trust. Each release became a source of anxiety rather than celebration.

That's when Cristiano decided he must solve this.

This frustration was pivotal. It became a catalyst for him to dive deep into testing as a new and promising career.

When you go after something that’s a crowded space, it’s hard to stand out, right? But because that was an emerging field, I had the opportunity to become someone relevant, at least in the Brazilian space. And then from that I founded several companies in the software testing field, and those companies went on to be acquired. So it's been quite the adventure so far.

He advises anyone stepping into QA today: "Testing is a craft by its own. You need to deeply learn the underlying principles, processes, and tools to think and act like a professional tester."

💡 Key Insight: Quality assurance isn't just about finding bugs—it's a specialized discipline requiring dedicated expertise. Organizations that treat testing as an afterthought rather than a craft consistently struggle with customer satisfaction and technical debt.

Act II – The Present: Leading Through Innovation with TestOps

Fast forward two decades, and Cristiano's daily focus has shifted toward test management, specifically the rapidly evolving discipline of TestOps.

At a small startup, managing tests in a spreadsheet is sufficient. But once you're juggling dozens or hundreds of testers, complex pipelines, and global releases, you need a robust platform.

TestOps is an approach that aligns testing practices with the continuous delivery culture of DevOps. According to Cristiano, traditional test management tools mainly supported manual testing processes. TestOps, however, addresses the need to integrate continuous testing, manage automation effectively, and align seamlessly with the rapid pace of DevOps cycles.

The practical difference is significant: instead of running tests at the end of development cycles and waiting days for results, TestOps embeds testing throughout the pipeline. Teams catch issues in minutes rather than days, and testing becomes a continuous feedback loop rather than a bottleneck.

When asked about the importance of using AI in test management, he believes that it plays an integral role, but only when it genuinely solves real-world issues.

We don’t implement AI for the sake of AI or because it's trendy. Instead, we start with identifying specific bottlenecks in the testing lifecycle, and then decide if classical algorithms, machine learning, or generative AI offers the best solution.

TrueTest, for instance, blends proprietary machine learning and generative AI to address common pain points such as test flakiness and lengthy test case development times. Where teams previously spent hours manually creating and maintaining test cases, TrueTest can reduce this to minutes while automatically adapting to application changes that would typically break traditional tests.

💡 Key Insight: The transition from spreadsheets to platforms typically becomes necessary when you have more than 10 testers, multiple concurrent releases, or when test maintenance consumes more than 30% of your QA team's time. These are signals that your testing approach has outgrown your tooling.

Act III – The Future: Embracing "AI Testing AI"

Looking ahead, Cristiano envisions a landscape radically transformed by AI.

With AI tools increasingly generating large portions of code, QA faces new challenges. How do you verify code written by machines? How do you ensure AI-generated applications meet quality standards when traditional testing approaches were designed for human-written code?

More code means more testing, but it’s also AI-generated, creating uncertainty about its quality.

That means AI will never fully replace human testers. Instead, he predicts a significant shift in their roles. "Automation should remove repetitive tasks, freeing testers to focus more on creative, strategic activities. We will always need humans for deep thinking, domain expertise, and collaborative aspects of testing."

Cristiano highlighted the potential shift in the role of testers: "Maybe ten years from now, Katalon's mission will revolve around ensuring seamless digital experiences, not just checking whether software functions correctly."

💡 Key Insight: Preparing for AI-augmented testing means investing in your team's strategic capabilities now. Focus on developing skills in test strategy, risk analysis, user experience evaluation, and cross-functional collaboration—the areas where human judgment remains irreplaceable.

What This Means for Your Team

Cristiano's story provides a fascinating narrative of a career shaped by continuous evolution, curiosity, and strategic vision. From his early days of frustration with poor software quality, through innovations in test management and AI integration, to anticipating a future dominated by AI-driven testing methodologies, Cristiano's journey mirrors the broader evolution in software quality assurance.

As you consider your own testing evolution, here are practical questions to guide your next steps:

Assess where you are: Are you still managing tests in spreadsheets while your development team has moved to continuous delivery? This mismatch often signals it's time to evolve your approach.

Identify your pain points: Is test flakiness causing your team to distrust automation results? Are you spending more time maintaining tests than creating new ones? These are specific problems that modern TestOps platforms like Katalon are designed to solve.

Prepare for the AI shift: Whether it's six months or six years away, AI will change how your team works. Start investing in the strategic skills that will become more valuable, not less, as automation handles routine tasks.

As we continue exploring the future of quality assurance, Cristiano's insights will undoubtedly guide the evolution of Katalon and inspire broader conversations within the industry. The story of quality assurance is still being written, and Cristiano Caetano is certainly among those shaping its next chapters.
